Later the town continued to grow as a shipbuilding center for steamboats and river barges until Jeffersonville became the largest inland ship builder in the US. Today this lovely old town continues to reinvent itself and is booming once again as shown by its rapid growth over the past 10 years. Soon residents will enjoy the city's new Canal District that will be anchored by major new hotel and convention center developments. While honoring its historic roots, the canal illustrates the progressive attitude of Jeffersonville turning a challenge many river towns face, the need to address combined sewer overflows, into an economic opportunity.
